Maj. S. Mark Pelham, DVM '93 Officer in Charge, Veterinary Cell, 404th Civil Affairs Battalion Horn of Africa
A team of U.S. Army veterinarians from the 403rd Civil Affairs Battalion and military working dog handlers—led by U.S. Army Maj. Mark Pelham ’93, provided subject matter training and exchange with members of the Kenyan Defense Force. Pelham said the training was productive; it focused on developing relationships between the two militaries, focusing on the military working dog and aspects of first aid, combat casualty care, handler proficiencies and IED recognition. As officer-in-charge for both missions while in Kenya, Pelham and his team worked with the First Canine Regiment, the Kenyan Defense Force and three U.S. military services—Army, Navy and Air Force. Pelham served with the 404th and 403rd Civil Affairs Battalion while deployed to the Horn of Africa. To see video, click for 1st engagement video and 2nd engagement video.
